The Ancient Egyptian Sphinx

Names and Basic Information of the Sphinx

The great Ancient Egyptian Sphinx is located in Giza, Egypt, which is located near the capital of Egypt today, Cairo; it is also called The Great Sphinx of Giza. The Sphinx is known for the strange way it looks. It is a reclining lion, but has a human face. It is also the oldest known monumental sculpture, thought to be built by Ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom between 2555 BC and 2532 BC. Although modern people today call it The Great Sphinx of Giza, it is not known what the Ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom called it, for there are no inscriptions anywhere telling or giving any hints to the name of the statue. Although, the ancient Egyptians in the New Kingdom called it Horemakhet, which means Horus of the Horizon. The length of the Sphinx is 241 feet, the width is 20 feet, and the Sphinx is also 66.34 feet high. It is the largest monumental sculpture in the world today, and is also one of the oldest and largest sculptures in the world.

The Sculpture Itself

From much research and findings in the past and present, there are many things we know about the sculpture. For example, we know that the Sphinx is one of the largest and oldest sculptures in the world. But even though there are many questions already answered about the Sphinx, there are still some unanswered questions. One challenging question that might not ever be answered is who modeled for the face of the sculpture. This is a challenging question because after thousands of years of sitting in the same spot through terrible weather, it is going to get worn out. Maybe a couple thousand years ago, we could have gotten the answer, but time and weather were battling against the Sphinx, and in that case, time and weather are always going to win. Although, there still might be some undiscovered scripture in a pyramid that has been hidden all these years. But thinking there might be a scripture somewhere isn’t going to help. But thanks to the clever way the pyramids were built, with all the traps, it makes it much more of a challenge. Questions like these are called “The Riddles of the Sphinx.”

Many researchers believe that the Sphinx was “built” by the Pharaoh Khafra. By built, it means that he came up with the idea for the sculpture, while mostly slave built the Sphinx. But an Egyptologist from France thinks that the sculpture was “built” by Khafra’s successor (pharaoh after him), Djedefre.

At school, it was the same old thing, with the same old teachers, giving us the same old books that had been used by the same old students. So to not bore you half to death, here is a small summary of school that day:

In gym, we played volleyball, which was as boring as ever with the jocks spiking the ball in front of the kids that can’t play sports; trying to impress one person or the other.

After getting changed out of my gym clothes, I then went directly to woodshop, which was right across the hall, we began to nail our birdhouse together, which we had spent 36 days working on, and then it was time for my Block 1.

In Spanish, everybody fooled around again, making it feel like free time, which is what I think the Spanish teacher wants.

After that, it was time for math where if you coughed, you got yelled at. After suffering for an hour, it was finally time for lunch; which was, in fact the loudest place in the building. After that, there was support time, which is pretty much study hall disguised.

And finally, I had Social Studies and Science, where we do worksheets the entire time. Now it was time to go home. Like I said before, I live in the middle of nowhere.

I woke up the next morning with no 20 pounds on my head, and no bored games in the Family Room. I then came back to the present and realized that today was Monday, which was my least favorite day of the week. Again, here comes the bad luck. There was a blizzard Saturday and Sunday, I was stuck playing board games over winter break, I had a cat put its claws in my head, and now winter break was over. Great. Just Great.

So there I am sitting there, once again having all the bad luck against my Mom; this time in Monopoly. We were wrapping up the game for the day, so we start counting our money.

“$1893,” she tells me with triumph.

“$592,” I manage to mutter.

By that time, It had stopped snowing, leading me to believe that tomorrow was going to be more adventeuorous than going around Atlantic City with a thimble.

Still not sure.                                                                                                                                                                                                       ___________________________________________________________________________________ I woke up the next morning feeling like there was 20 pounds right on top of my head – which there was. I looked up to see my 20 pound cat, Kitty (what a clever name) trying to balance on my head without falling off. Kitty did this about once a week, normally on my busiest day of the week. And what was worse was, whenever I tried to get up, he just put his claws into my head so that he wouldn’t need to move. But I had my ways getting him off… scratch that, my WAY. My was of getting him off was to start petting his head with one hand, and when I here him purring as loud as a motorboat, I reach in with my other hand and pick him up without Kitty expecting a thing. So after I had done my little trick, I saw that it was STILL snowing, but not as hard, so I went out to see my mom setting up Monopoly in the Family Room. Great, another day of bored games.
